Hi! I'm Carla and I created this site to share my
Bicycle Odyssey photos from the travel memoir about my year-long adventure bicycling around the world in 1991 - 1992. Please check the link to my blog https://carlafountain.home.blog/ also.
Be sure to go to the end of this slide presentation for links to recipes and music for each country we traveled in on this odyssey.!

We landed in London from Los Angeles before heading up north to bicycle in Yorkshire, the Lake District, and Scotland.
Paris to Cadaqués
Paris to Copenhagen
We flew to Nairobi and biked the Pan-African Highway across Kenya and Uganda.
Then we went to the Swahili Coast to Lamu
From Nairobi we flew to Bombay, We bicycled in circles through road construction and shanty towns to find the domestic terminal so we could fly to Goa.
We started in Vasco da Gama, Goa and ended in Kovalam at the southern tip of India. We spent two and a half months on the road in India.
We flew from Calcutta to Kathmandu.
Then, we took a bus to Pokhara and trekked to Poon Hill.
We flew into Bangkok, took a bus to Chiang Mai and bicycled north and east.
We spent a month exploring. Before moving on, we spent a few days on the island of Ko Samet while we waited for our visas for Vietnam.
We bicycled through the Mekong Delta from Saigon to Chau Duc. Then we took a train to Hue and bicycled down the coast to Nha Trang.
We bicycled around the island of Bali and visited the neighboring islands of Java, Lombok, and Gili Air.
Food was a source of pleasure and discovery in each place we traveled. When I feel nostalgic I seek out food from the different areas we spent time in. If I can't find a restaurant I try to recreat the food. Here is a sample of my favorites.
In England, we stopped for tea and scones every two hours to warm up and refuel. Here is a link for a healthy scone recipe.
Scotland's cold climate called for hot tea and scones as well as hot Gaelic coffee at night.

France gave us lots of fresh baguette and vine-ripened produce. We usually made our own meals with fresh ingredients.
Here is a recipe for a roasted vegetarian baguette sandwich.

Here is a sangria recipe for Spain.
You can skip the brandy to make it lighter or add more soda.
Hot chocolate for Amsterdam
Non-dairy folks can use almond or coconut milk instead of cow's milk in this recipe.

In Kenya we had a lot of mandazi and chai at our rest stops. It is similar to a donut but lighter, with a delightful hint of cardamom.

Chicken Biryani Swahili Style
"I hear a wind
whistling air,
Whispering in my ear..
Oh girl dancing down those dirty and dusty trails.
Take a hip to hip rocket through the wilderness,
Around the world the trip begins with a kiss
Roam if you want to,
Roam around the world,
Roam if you want to,
Without wings, without wheels.
Roam if you want to,
Without anything but the love we feel."
The Highlands could be mournful. "Ae Fond Kiss" by Robert Burns captures the mood.
"Ae fond kiss, and then we sever;
Ae fareweel, alas, for ever!
Deep in heart-wrung tears I'll pledge thee,
Warring sighs and groans I'll wage thee."
Bagpipes and kilts!.
J'ai Deux Amours
On dit qu'au delà des mers
Là-bas sous le ciel clair
Il existe une cité
Au séjour enchanté
Et sous les grands arbres noirs
Chaque soir
Vers elle s'en va tout mon espoir
J'ai deux amours
Mon pays et Paris
It still rings in my head...
This was the hit on the ariwaves in Thailand in the spring of 1992. The group is Carabao. Thai rock
Haunting Dan Bau for the curious.
We had never heard anything like this. We enjoyed gamelan concerts many nights in Bali.
